Good as news: positive environmental stories you may have missed this summer

As the summer comes to an end, we wanted to look back at the positive environmental stories of the past few months. Finding good news during the COVID-19 pandemic was a tough task, but also an inspiring one. Amidst all the bad there was some incredible good. At Environment America and U.S. PIRG, we didn’t stop our work for the environment; we were able to celebrate victories and make serious progress on our campaigns.

Statement: Toxic Water Pollution Rule puts rivers and drinking water at risk

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized its rule allowing power plants to dump more toxic pollution into the nation’s waterways. This decision reverses progress made under a 2015 policy. Currently, power plants account for 30 percent of toxic discharges to waterways, including arsenic, lead, mercury and selenium, according to EPA data. A federal court found last year that the agency’s 2015 regulations governing power plants already fell short of the protections required by law.
