A little over a week after a sperm whale washed up on a beach in Florida with a belly full of plastic trash, advocates, students and community groups are calling on Whole Foods Northeast to put the planet over plastic.

Kelsey Lamp, Protect our Oceans Campaign Director with Environment America was joined by representatives from MASSPIRG, the Charles River Watershed Association and the Sustainable Sharon Coalition at a Whole Foods in Boston to deliver a letter signed by 56 environmental, recreation and student groups from around New England. The letter calls on Whole Foods' Northeast regional president, Rick Bonin, to protect our wildlife and our waterways from plastic pollution by making a commitment to eliminate single-use plastic packaging throughout the chain's grocery stores.

This letter comes just a week before investors in Amazon, Whole Foods' parent company, are set to vote on a shareholder proposal that urges the company to take action to reduce its plastic waste.
